Huntersville hosts Hunger Day program

HUNTERSVILLE -- A Huntersville-area tradition will be renewed Saturday with the 31st annual World Hunger Day program at First Baptist Church-Huntersville.

The event includes what is billed as north Mecklenburg’s largest yard sale, along with bake and craft sales, a silent auction, live entertainment, and a barbecue. Activities begin at 7 a.m. at the church, 119 North Old Statesville Road, near the center of Huntersville.

All proceeds from the event go to local, regional and international hunger relief efforts. In the past three decades, more than $829,000 has been raised to help fight hunger.

The barbecue is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Among the beneficiaries have been Huntersville Food Pantry, Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen, Southern Baptist World Hunger Relief Funds, and various one-time programs -- such as relief for Cannon Mills textile workers who lost their jobs, and survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
