Man faces murder charge after pedestrian struck

A Charlotte man is now charged with murder after police said he struck a pedestrian on West Sugar Creek Road nearly a week ago.

The additional charge comes after police said the pedestrian, 45-year-old John Hazel Evans, succumbed to his injuries early Saturday.

The suspect in the case, Stefano Kevin Jett, 21, has already been in jail in connection with the hit-and-run. Detectives obtained a murder warrant for Jett on Saturday morning, police said.

Detectives were called to the intersection of West Sugar Creek and Interstate 85 around 12:02 a.m. last Sunday where they found an injured Evans. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police began searching for the vehicle that struck Evans, which authorities said had fled from the parking lot of a nearby Circle-K and side-swiped another vehicle while leaving the scene.

Authorities said their investigation led them to Jett, who was arrested the evening of Sept. 23.

Jett was initially charged with multiple offenses, including felony hit and run and driving while licensed revoked. Police said the suspect vehicle, which was described as a grayish or light blue Honda, was recovered from a pond on Phil O’Neil Drive after detectives received a tip about the case.

Police asked anyone with additional information about the case to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective. You also can call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
