Nonprofits can seek share of $501,991 in federal money

United Way to distribute money to local food and shelter programs

Mecklenburg County has been awarded $501,991 in federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program money to help supplement local emergency food and shelter efforts. The amount is based on the community’s unemployment numbers, compared to other communities in the country.

Agencies that qualify for the program can apply for a share of the money this week. A local board facilitated by Charlotte’s United Way will determine how the funds are to be distributed to the area’s nonprofits.

To apply, organizations must: be a private, voluntary nonprofit or unit of the government; eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; demonstrate the capability to delivery emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

Qualifying organizations should contact United Way at 704-283-1537. Applications must be postmarked no later than Oct. 5. Mark Price
