Man held in theft of ’69 Mustang

A Davidson County man is jailed in Rowan County, in connection with the theft of five vehicles, including a valuable Ford Mustang.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says Daryl Lewis Lyerly, 32, of Lexington, was arrested by Davidson County authorities Saturday at his home. He was turned over to Rowan County deputies later in the day.

The theft of the vehicles happened April 24, with a report that the five cars had been taken from a building on N.C. 150. The thefts included a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 -- a rare, limited-edition model.

A 1969 Mustang Boss 429 sold earlier this year at an auction in Arizona for $253,000.

Investigators got a tip that the Mustang was being hidden in Davidson County, and detectives from Rowan and Davidson counties searched a storage building Friday on Haden Grove Churchy Road in Linwood. They say they found the 1969 Mustang in the building and obtained warrants on Lyerly in the case.

He is jailed under $5,000 bond, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
