STATESVILLE -- A Charlotte man has been jailed in Iredell County and charged with trying to pass counterfeit checks drawn on the account of an Iredell County woman.
The suspect is identified as Glen Perry Witcher Jr.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says the case was reported Sept. 14, when a woman said she had placed a check in her mailbox a day earlier, for someone to pick up. The next day, she learned someone had stolen the check and created counterfeit checks with her bank account information.
The woman also told deputies someone had tried to cash one of the checks at a Fifth Third Bank in Cornelius and had successfully cashed a check at a Fifth Third Bank in Davidson.
After talking to bank employees, deputies say, they identified Witcher, 44, as a suspect. Witcher was arrested last week by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and turned over to Iredell deputies.
Authorities and postal service officials recommend that people not put checks in their mailboxes, as theft of those checks would enable the thieves to create counterfeit checks off real bank account numbers.
