Woodfield Investments won Charlotte City Council approval last week for its contentious proposed apartment complex near the Barclay Downs neighborhood in SouthPark.
The $50 million project will be on 3.2 acres at the corner of Barclay Downs Drive and Morrison Boulevard, next to Barclay Downs Swim and Racquet Club.
Construction will begin next summer, and the project will take an estimated two years to complete, said Chad Hagler of Woodfield Investments.
The swim club filed a protest petition, fearing the size and scale of the project would bring more cut-through traffic and cast a shadow on the swim club and tennis courts.
More than 200 concerned neighbors and swim-club members attended the hearing this summer in protest.
After months of negotiations between the developer, the neighborhood homeowners association and the swim club, the developer agreed to decrease the total units from 300 to 280, shift the building away from the Barclay Downs club and reduce the height along the swim-club boundary.
The swim club then withdrew its protest petition.
The lone “no” vote at the zoning meeting Sept. 24 came from City Council representative Patsy Kinsey.
