McAdenville voters decide on alcohol sales

McADENVILLE -- Voters in this eastern Gaston County community will decide Tuesday if it will be possible to buy a beer or mixed drink at a restaurant in Christmas Town USA.

Three alcohol sales issues are on the ballot in McAdenville. They would allow the sale of beer, wine and mixed drinks in restaurants, motels and public entertainment places. The issue of ABC stores is not on the ballot.

McAdenville is famous for its annual display of holiday lights, with nearly every building in the town decorated from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

The issues were put on the ballot by residents -- not town officials, as is usually the case. More than 35 percent of the town’s 405 registered voters signed a petition for the vote. Mayor Farrell Buchanan is among the opponents of the issue.

The pro and con sides for the issue follow the usual arguments. Proponents say it will bring extra business and tax revenue to town. Opponents argue alcohol sales will bring crime and other problems.

All the voting will take place at a single polling place -- McAdenville Elementary School. Voting continues until 7:30 p.m.
