A pair of crashes about the same time Wednesday morning in different parts of Charlotte left two people seriously injured, authorities say.
Police say a car slammed into the rear of a stopped Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus on Wilkinson Boulevard, and a motorcyclist crashed on Pineville-Matthews Road near Park Road, not far from Carolina Place Mall.
The car-bus crash happened about 9 a.m. in the 2900 block of Wilkinson Boulevard, near Ashley Road.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Bus 803 was returning to the bus lot for maintenance when it was hit from behind by a 1995 Volvo, according to police. The 26-year-old woman driving the bus suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Volvo, identified by police as John Froneberger, 21, was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon. His car plowed under the rear of the bus, and Charlotte Fire Capt. Mark Basnight said it took 13 minutes for a crew of 18 firefighters to free the man.
The outbound lanes of Wilkinson Boulevard were closed for several hours while police conducted an investigation.
The motorcycle crash happened in the 8800 block of Pineville-Matthews Road. Details on that crash were not available Wednesday morning, but a spokeswoman for Medic said the driver was airlifted to the trauma center at Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
