Cristopher Alvarado, an eighth-grader at Collinswood Language Academy, has been selected as a Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar.
He was one of 52 students selected from among hundreds of applicants nationwide. The Young Scholar program selects eighth- through 12th-graders with exceptional academic talent, leadership and character.
The scholars receive immediate support from an educational adviser and financial support for their individualized learning plans. The students receive financial support throughout college based on need.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation was established in 2000. The foundation aims to support individuals who defy the stereotype that poverty precludes high achievement.
It feels amazing, honestly, said Cristopher, whos been on the A Honor Roll at Collinswood for five years and is a member of the National Academic League. Its a huge relief. Now I can be the best that I can be without the financial insecurities about college. Im thinking big now.
