It always confuses me that Oktoberfest is usually held in September, like the celebration last weekend at Metrolina Expo Center. Bars and breweries extend the festivities into October, which makes more sense. Despite my confusion, I think the thing Charlotte nightlife really gets right is that most events benefit charity. It’s not partying, it’s fundraising!

Beard BeCAUSE Clean Shaven Kick-off Party at NoDa Brewing Company (2229 North Davidson St.). The kick off, or shave off, is for the fundraising beard growing contest to benefit domestic violence. Donations welcomed. 7:30 p.m. 704-451-1394.
WOBtoberfest: World of Beer (222 East Bland St.) has more than 500 beers from more than 40 countries and is taking us to Germany with all Sam Adams Oktoberfest beers on tap. Event features live music and a stein holding contest. 9 p.m.–12 a.m. $3 Sam Adam pints. 704-333-2080.
And then there’s Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery – German style beer, brewed from home, right here in Charlotte. Featuring live music. Noon –10 p.m. $5. www.oldemeckbrew.com.
And to absorb all that German beer you can attend the Dining with Friends open party at Blackfinn American Saloon (210 E. Trade St.). Dining with Friends is a food fight against AIDS. It’s the kick-off party for the weekly dinner parties that will be held throughout Charlotte. Meet at 9 p.m. at the McColl Center for Visual Arts for dessert. Blackfinn and Kiss 95.1 will be providing dinner. 7 p.m. 704-570-9595.
Drink for Pink at RE: Public (314 N. College St.). Some philanthropic fun to support breast cancer research, featuring food from Sadie’s Soul Food and DJ Yasmin Young. This is the after party for the “Walk for a Cure” Saturday morning. 10 p.m. 980-322-9859.
