It always confuses me that Oktoberfest is usually held in September, like the celebration last weekend at Metrolina Expo Center. Bars and breweries extend the festivities into October, which makes more sense. Despite my confusion, I think the thing Charlotte nightlife really gets right is that most events benefit charity. It’s not partying, it’s fundraising!
Friday
Rocktoberfest Bar Crawl: This event is a live music bar crawl where you dance from bar to bar – each will have music from acoustic duos to bands and a rock-n-roll karaoke stop. The schedule: 7-8:45 p.m. Dixie’s Tavern (Don Arthur Acoustic); 9 -10 p.m. Connolly’s (Acoustic Duo); 10 -11 p.m. Prohibition (Rock-N-Roll Karaoke); 11 p.m.-midnight Tilt (TBD); and midnight, Ri-Ra (TBD). $5. www.rockhouseevents.com.
Beard BeCAUSE Clean Shaven Kick-off Party at NoDa Brewing Company (2229 North Davidson St.). The kick off, or shave off, is for the fundraising beard growing contest to benefit domestic violence. Donations welcomed. 7:30 p.m. 704-451-1394.

WOBtoberfest: World of Beer (222 East Bland St.) has more than 500 beers from more than 40 countries and is taking us to Germany with all Sam Adams Oktoberfest beers on tap. Event features live music and a stein holding contest. 9 p.m.–12 a.m. $3 Sam Adam pints. 704-333-2080.
And then there’s Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery – German style beer, brewed from home, right here in Charlotte. Featuring live music. Noon –10 p.m. $5. www.oldemeckbrew.com.
And to absorb all that German beer you can attend the Dining with Friends open party at Blackfinn American Saloon (210 E. Trade St.). Dining with Friends is a food fight against AIDS. It’s the kick-off party for the weekly dinner parties that will be held throughout Charlotte. Meet at 9 p.m. at the McColl Center for Visual Arts for dessert.
