Police said they’ve arrested the man who wore a painter’s mask as he robbed an east Charlotte bank in August and then tried to rob the same bank a month later.
Thomas Anthony Hammond, 46, was arrested Tuesday in Georgia. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals to find Hammond.
He faces robbery offenses in connection with crimes that happened at the BB&T branch on Albemarle Road , not far from the intersection with Harrisburg Road.
On Aug. 29, a man entered the bank just after 11 a.m. and passed a note to a teller, the FBI said. He received cash and then walked outside.
Then, on the afternoon of Sept. 21, a man – whose description was similar to that of the earlier robber – went into the bank and handed a note to the teller. But the suspect left without getting any money, the FBI said.
In each case, the man wore a hat and a painter’s mask. No one was hurt in either incident.
Police didn’t say how they connected Hammond to the crimes.
Hammond remained in custody in Georgia on Wednesday, awaiting extradition back to Charlotte.
Records show he was arrested in Mecklenburg County in July, charged with assault on a female and communicating threats. Those charges were later dismissed. At the time of his arrest, he was living in Mint Hill, according to arrest records.
