Police continue probe in death of Charlotte student at ASU

Appalachian State University campus police are continuing the investigation into last weekend’s death of a student from Charlotte.

ASU police say they are still looking into circumstances surrounding the death of Tyler Blalock, a 19-year-old ASU sophomore whose body was found Saturday in Kraut Creek, near Dunham Park in Boone. Police say an initial autopsy indicates Blalock had drowned.

According to the campus police report, Blalock slipped near the creek, fell and hit his head on a rock, then landed in the water. A passerby spotted the body Saturday morning.

Investigators say they believe alcohol was involved. According to reports, authorities want to know where Blalock got the alcohol. A staff member at the ALE office in Newton, which covers the Boone area, said a report would be issued when the probe is finished.

The Newton office of N.C. Alcohol and Law Enforcement said it could not comment on the case, forwarding questions to ASU police. However, there were several published reports Thursday that ALE agents are helping Appalachian State police in the investigation.

Blalock was a North Mecklenburg High graduate in 2011 and was a sophomore at ASU.

Blalock’s family members repeatedly have asked people in the ASU community to come forward with any information they might have of the events surrounding the teen’s death.
