Lee and Robin Tappy

Robin, 34, and Lee, 37, met by chance while vacationing on Grand Bahama Island in March 2001. They exchanged email addresses, and though Robin lived near Boston, they began dating long-distance. Many trips and several years later, the couple married June 11, 2005. They live in Charlotte and Lee tells their story.

Catch a ride: Robin and I were both with groups of friends that happened to be catching cabs from our hotel. We all decided to share one to Port Lacaya and Robin definitely caught my attention. It was my last night of vacation but she and I spent the next few hours getting to know each other, laughing and walking on the beach.

Parting ways: At the end of the night, we all returned to the hotel and Robin and I said good night. I bumped into her on the beach before I left the next day and we exchanged email addresses. Robin mentioned she was considering Duke University as a possibility for graduate school and I told her I hoped she’d come visit North Carolina.

Keep in touch: Robin and I emailed and called for several months before she came to Charlotte for our first “official” date weekend. We went to Myrtle Beach and had an amazing trip. She made her final visit to Duke in August 2002, was accepted to their physical therapy doctorate program and finally moved within driving distance.

Looking back: Our journey has led us through three long years of burning up the road between here and Durham. It includes Robin’s graduation in 2005 – our wedding a month later –our first house and the birth of our twins. Through it all, I still look at her and picture us on that first night in the Bahamas, when the timing was right and fate stepped in. Hilary Trenda
