Walker Washington

A federal fugitive remained behind bars in Charlotte early Saturday after authorities found him more than 600 miles away from the N.Y. facility he’d escaped from in July.

Walker Washington, 44, was arrested in Charlotte on Friday after federal authorities said surveillance and field interviews determined he was in the area.

Washington was being held without bond in the Mecklenburg County jail.

The U.S. Marshals Service said authorities had been searching for Washington after he escaped July 11 from a residential re-entry facility in Bronx, N.Y. He was being held there after being convicted of mail fraud, according to a news release.

Friday’s arrest was made by the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force, which also includes officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office.
