Did a double Sunday; caught the first half of the Charlotte Bobcats game before walking to the stadium. The Bobcats were interesting. Gerald Henderson looked outstanding, and Kemba Walker, Ben Gordon and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were very good.
The Bobcats scored 100 points and won. If you wonder why I’m writing about an NBA exhibition game, you weren’t at Bank of America Stadium.
• Seven NFL teams have made the playoffs after a 1-4 start, most recently the Denver Broncos in 2011. But I can’t see it with the Panthers. I could be more wrong about this team than any I have covered, perhaps in my career, in any sport.
• It’s not as if there’s one weakness the Panthers have to correct. The problem isn’t one player, one position or one unit.
On third downs Seattle, which is led by a rookie quarterback, converted seven of 14 opportunities. The Panthers converted two of 11.
They look as though their offensive talent would be striking – quarterback, running backs, receivers, offensive line. That offense generated three points Sunday.
• The defense did not give up a huge late-game pass, in part because safety Haruki Nakamura lined up in Pineville.
The defense instead gave up a late-game 11-yard run to Marshawn Lynch on third and 7.
• Carolina’s biggest defect is obvious: When it has to make a play, it fails. How do you fix that?
