The thrill of the chase

Women are told it’s better to play hard to get than to seem too available, and for some it ends in happily-ever-after. For Kellen Butts, her boyfriend John Seymour was left hot on the chase, eventually winning her love and her hand in a giggly St. Patty’s day celebration.

“I always knew I would marry him,” Kellen says, “But I fought it for the longest time.” John, who knew Kellen was “the one” the moment he met her through mutual friends, spent the next year trying to get the two of them on the same page. “The timing was just not right until it was right!” she says.

But eventually, the stars aligned. On August 4, 2011, John returned home from dinner with his parents to find Kellen, also arriving home from a night out with her girlfriends. John distracted Kellen with an announcement that he’d just bought a new car online, and while they were customizing their new purchase (and John was easing his soon-to-be fiancée’s concerns), he said, “I got you one, too!”

Kellen asked, “A car?” just as John gave her a radiant-cut diamond from Diamonds Direct instead. Not being the most sentimental couple, Kellen explains, the engagement was fitting, as they’ve always been the kind of couple that is more likely to be seen cracking jokes than doing anything overtly romantic.

The wedding planning began, with the couple’s church – St. Gabriel Catholic Church – chosen for the ceremony and Fusion Photography hired to capture the event. “I have known Deevo for a few years and had used him for a couple events. We had a great working relationship, and I knew he would do a fabulous job! The creativity was unbelievable.”

Kellen walked down the aisle to “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” while clasping a bouquet of white hydrangeas. “When I got to John, he was tearing up and we just started laughing at each other. We giggled the entire ceremony. I don’t think Father Frank was impressed!” Kellen jokes.

The lighthearted atmosphere continued on to the reception, where guests were served mini Rueben sandwiches and Italian fare before proceeding to dance all night, with a band setting the tone. A four-leaf clover theme charmed the day, along with an occasional nod to the humor behind the couple’s name.

“The first thing John said to me when he found out my last name was ‘Butts’ was, ‘You know when we get married it will be the Seymour-Butts wedding?’ I told him to not hold his breath. Now look where we are!”

Today, Kellen and John are enjoying spending time with their puppy Eddie, a new addition since returning home from their honeymoon in Rivera Maya, Mexico. “He is a hilarious chocolate lab. We have watched him grow and love him so much!”
