Charlotte-area Publix stores to open in late October

Florida-based Publix said Monday that its two new Charlotte-area stores will open Oct. 24, introducing a new competitor to the region’s grocery market.

The stores are located on Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill and Charlotte Highway in Indian Land. They’ll both open with 6:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Publix is also planning a store in Charlotte, to open in early 2014. That store, at Providence Road West and Johnston Road in Ballantyne, will be the company’s first store as part of a new Charlotte division.

Publix is expected to challenge Harris Teeter, the locally-based upscale supermarket chain, for a dominant spot in the Charlotte grocery market.
