2 held after Belmont-to-Charlotte chase

Police are holding a man and woman in custody after a two-county pursuit that ended in west Charlotte on Monday night.

Belmont police say the series of events began about 8:30 p.m., while their officers were keeping surveillance at the Abbey Inn. A short time later, officers said they saw a man and woman they had been watching in connection with a drug investigation.

Police say the man and woman got into a truck and drove off, trying to elude police. Offers pursued the truck from eastern Gaston County into western Mecklenburg County. They say the driver turned into neighborhood streets and eventually got onto Garrison Road, a one-way street near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Belmont police say the man and woman jumped from the truck and ran into the woods. Officers went into the woods to find the two people, and police called in a K-9 dog search unit to help. About 30 to 45 minutes later, police found the two people and arrested them.

A Hazmat team was called in to check a liquid substance found inside the truck, but it proved to be nothing serious.

Police have not said if the two people have been charged.
