Herb Gray is a true art patron. The second-term board of directors member for the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture collects pieces he loves, and not only because they may increase in value. A dynamic presence on the Charlotte cultural scene, Gray and his wife Felicia will host a large fundraiser in mid-December to support the Gantt Center.
Up to par: This year for the annual golf tournament he founded, The Gray Classic, Gray asked artist J. Stacey Utley to create a piece called Finding Our Fairway. The collage is currently displayed at Deltas Restaurant on North Tryon Street and will travel within the city until its final destination in Grays home. The work features the citys legendary golfers over the past 30 years.
Time to reflect: I find peace of mind in looking at art or listening to music or seeing a performance, Gray said. It serves a need for me as well because this momentarily gets me away from the grind in my life.
Future plans: Although the Grays have hosted fundraisers before, they are hoping to expand their guest list to about 200-300 people. Thats a big endeavor Im working on, he said.
