A Hickory man has been arrested in connection with a September shooting on a baseball field.
One person died in the shooting, but no one has been charged in the homicide at this point. Another victim remains hospitalized.
McDonald Lee Thompson, 44, was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury after the Sept. 15 shooting. Thompson was being held Wednesday in the Catawba County jail under a $150,000 bond.
Hickory Police Sgt. James Kerley said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and additional charges or arrests are possible.
The shooting occurred the afternoon of Sept. 15 on the baseball field at the Brown-Penn Recreation Center on Third Street SW in Hickory. Kerley said no event was occurring at the field at the time, but a few people were involved in the shooting incident.
Olutayo Babatunde, 29, died in the shooting while a second man was taken to the hospital.
After the shooting, police said they were looking for a 1990’s-era purple Cadillac with a beige top that witnesses reported seeing leaving the rec center, according to a Sept. 16 report from NBC Charlotte, the Observer’s news partner.
