CLOVER -- York County authorities say a 30-year-old Gastonia man led police on a two-county chase Thursday, driving a truck that had been reported stolen by his father.

The suspect, identified as Gideon Ephruim Johnson, was arrested on drug charges, according to sheriff’s deputies. And they say Johnson’s father is trying to decide if he’ll press vehicle theft charges against his son.

Deputies say Jerry Jerome Johnson, who lives on Bellaire Circle in Clover, called authorities Thursday and reported his 1972 GMC pick-up truck and a riding mower were missing. A short time later, York deputies learned that police in Gaston County were pursuing the 1972 truck and were entering York County.

Police say the truck slowed as it got on Bellaire Circle, and a man jumped from the vehicle and ran into the woods. Deputies called for their K-9 dog search unit, and the search led to Jerry Johnson’s house on Bellaire Circle, authorities say.

Deputies say they convinced the suspect, later identified as Gideon Johnson, to come out of his father’s home. The truck was searched, and deputies say they found nine bags of marijuana. Gideon Johnson was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Authorities say they plan to talk with the suspect’s father, to determine if he wants to press charges.
