Charlotte-Mecklenburg police thought they were coming to the aid of an accident victim Sunday night, but officers found a homicide instead.
Now detectives are trying to solve the shooting death of 36-year-old Olman Lainez Cruz.
Shortly before midnight, police were called to the Ashley Apartments, in the 6600 block of Idlewild Road. That is about a quarter-mile east of East Independence Boulevard.
Police said they received a call to help a man who had fallen down an apartment stairwell. When they arrived, they discovered the man, later identified as Cruz, had been shot. Medic arrived moments later, but the man was dead, police say.
Police spent much of the night trying to find people with information in the case. No arrests have been announced. Several neighbors told reporters Monday morning that they heard loud noises late Sunday night. They said the noises could have been gunshots.
Investigators ask that anyone with information call detectives at 704-432-TIPS, or leave information with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
