Indiana hospital executive named president of Presbyterian Healthcare

Deaconess Hospital CEO Harry L. Smith Jr. joins Novant Health Nov. 12

Harry L. Smith Jr., a hospital executive from Evansville, Ind., will join Novant Health as president of Presbyterian Healthcare and the Greater Charlotte Market, effective Nov. 12.

He replaces Mark Billings, who recently became president of Shared Services for Novant, the Winston-Salem-based health care organization that owns Presbyterian Healthcare and its four Mecklenburg County hospitals.

For the past six years, Smith has been president and CEO of Deaconess Hospital, part of Deaconess Health System based in Evansville. He was responsible for three acute-care hospitals with a total of 541 beds and $646.7 million net operating revenue.

He has more than 25 years’ experience in health care, having also served as president and senior administrative officer at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., and executive vice-president and CEO at Northtowns Hospitals in Buffalo, Kenmore and Cheektowaga, N.Y. He also held leadership positions at Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania and Barnes Healthcare System in Missouri.

Smith holds a master’s degree in hospital and healthcare administration from the University of Minnesota.
