Traffic problems are getting worse -- not better -- as we approach the end of the Tuesday morning commute in the Charlotte region.
Congestion is causing very slow traffic on a number of routes, and there are more than a half-dozen collisions adding to the problems.
Here is the situation at 8:40 a.m.:
-- Independence Boulevard inbound ... An earlier collision between Idlewild and Sharon Amity roads has been cleared, but traffic remains slow from Conference Drive to Sharon Amity Road.
-- Lawyers Road at Brickstone Road ... A wreck is causing backups in both directions on Lawyers Road, a short distance on the inbound side of Lebanon Road. This happened about 7:30 a.m., and police are still working to clear the scene. Motorists should find alternate routes until 9 a.m.
-- I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion is slowing traffic to 15 or 20 mph from Providence Road to South Boulevard.
-- I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion is slowing traffic to 15 or 20 mph from Mooresville south to Huntersville (Exit 23).
-- I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion slowing traffic to 20 or 25 mph from Carowinds to Tyvola Road.
-- I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... This is the worst congestion problem so far this week, with average speeds of 20 mph from N.C. 73 down to I-485.
-- Providence Road inbound ... Traffic averaging 20 to 25 mph from Rea Road to Wendover Road. A disabled vehicle near Sharon Amity Road is making things worse.
-- North Tryon Street at University City Boulevard ... A collision is slowing traffic to 20 mph on southbound North Tryon.
-- Harris Boulevard at IBM Drive ... A disabled vehicle has been cleared, but congestion remains.
-- York Road at Riverpointe Drive, York-Mecklenburg line ... A collision with injuries is causing heavy congestion. Motorists should consider finding an alternate route.
-- East John Street at I-485, Matthews ... A collision is causing moderate delays.
-- Ballantyne Commons Parkway at Tom Short Road ... A collision with moderate delays.
