Your morning traffic update

A major traffic problem has developed Wednesday morning on inbound Brookshire Freeway near Interstate 85 in northwest Charlotte.

A five-vehicle wreck was reported about 8:15 a.m. near Idaho Drive. That’s a few hundred feet inbound from I-85, and it had blocked all inbound lanes at 8:25 a.m.

Motorists should use alternate routes until at least 8:45 a.m.

Meanwhile, congestion remains a problem Wednesday morning on several roadways in the Charlotte region.

At 8:20 a.m., traffic was moving slowly on sections of the interstate highways, but very slow traffic also was reported on Pineville-Matthews, Providence and Albemarle roads.

Here is a summary of problems at 8:20 a.m.:

-- Brookshire Freeway inbound, northwest Charlotte ... A multi-vehicle wreck near I-85. All inbound lanes closed at 8:20 a.m. Wreck involves an overturned vehicle, so delays are likely until 9 a.m.

-- I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Typical congestion problems, between Providence Road and I-77. Speeds averaging 15 to 20 mph.

-- I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Typical congestion problems, between Carowinds Boulevard and Tyvola Road. Speeds averaging 20 mph.

-- I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Typical congestion problems, between Mooresville and I-485. Speeds averaging 15 to 20 mph.

-- I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... Typical congestion problems, between N.C. 73 and I-485. Speeds averaging 15 to 20 mph.

-- I-485 inner loop, north Mecklenburg ... A collision near N.C. 49/University City Boulevard has been moved to the shoulder. Minor delays.

-- Providence Road inbound ... Congestion slowing traffic to average of 20 mph from Arboretum to Wendover Road.

-- Pineville-Matthews Road, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion slowing traffic between Carmel Road and Carolina Place Mall.

-- Albemarle Road inbound ... Congestion slowing traffic to 10 mph from Lawyers Road to Sharon Amity Road.

-- Sharonview Lane, between Old Providence and Carmel roads ... A collision, but only minor delays.

-- U.S. 601, south of Monroe ... A tractor-trailer and car collided near Old U.S. 74. Moderate delays in the area.

A broken water main in the 4400 block of South Tryon Street is still being repaired by crews, but it is in the outbound lane and will have little impact on the morning commute.

It’s a chilly morning, with temperatures mostly in the middle 40s across the area. Skies are mostly cloudy, but forecasters expect a nice day, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the lower 70s.
