Memorial this morning for Bill Friday

CHAPEL HILL -- A memorial service for the man who directed North Carolina’s state university system for three decades is scheduled for Wednesday morning on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus.

The service for Bill Friday will take place at 10 a.m. at Memorial Hall and will be televised live across the state.

Friday died last week at age 92. He was reared in Gaston County and went on to serve as president of the UNC system from 1956 to 1986. He remained active up to his death, hosting an interview program on the UNC TV network.

Speakers for Wednesday morning’s service will include journalist Charlie Rose, members of Friday’s family, former Gov. Jim Hunt, and Gov. Bev Perdue.

UNC-TV outlets in the Charlotte area are WTVI (Time Warner cable channel 13) and WUNG (cable channel 15).
