Susan Edmonson, 56, is a mixed-media artist and quilter. With a degree in art and design, she is familiar with working in a variety of media. This knowledge, combined with her love of working with fabric, led to her success in the world of mixed media, which uses a variety of materials, including fabric, paper, cardboard, metal, beading and paint. Edmonson is also known for her quilts and teaches quilting.
Unknown potential: Edmonsons approach is to recognize and foster the untapped talent in each of her students. People have doubts in their abilities, and I like to encourage them to focus on what they are capable of doing, she said.
The art of quilting: As a member of the Charlotte Quilters Guild, Edmonson has been involved in the quilting community for more than 20 years. Although quilting is about function, Edmonson sees more of the art in the form and believes it is an easy way to learn sewing.
Open to interpretation: Edmonson is known for her wall hangings and fabric books, both of which she has taught in classes. Both types of projects can range from simple to elaborate, with varying amounts of embellishment.
