BELMONT -- Police in Gaston and McDowell counties are looking for a 27-year-old mother who hasn’t been seen since Sunday.

Police say Elizabeth Estelle Stonger, of Lowell, left her job at a Wal-Mart in Belmont last Sunday afternoon on a lunch break. That is the last time she was reported being seen.

Stonger, who goes by the name Liz, is the mother of a 2-year-old boy, according to authorities.

Her sister, Amy Stonger, told Observer news partner WCNC-TV, “This is not anything we would expect from her. She’s in love with her son. I can’t believe she would take off.”

Stonger also told WCNC, “I don’t think we’re going to get good news. I’m just hoping we get some kind of news, because I can’t live my life not knowing what happened.”

Without giving specifics, police say they suspect she might be in the McDowell County area. Stonger is described as a white female, 5 feet 3 and 180 pounds, with hazel eyes and red hair.

She was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina, with N.C. license tags ANC-6609. The car has a bunny sticker on the fuel door, and a woman-and-child stick-figure decal on the back of the vehicle.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Belmont police, 704-825-3792.
