Just over 15,000 Mecklenburg voters cast ballots Thursday on the first day of early voting, an increase of 37.7 percent from the last presidential election four years ago.
Other areas of the state also saw a spike in early voting compared to 2008, with more than 150,000 residents voting Thursday, according to the state Board of Elections.

The state Board of Elections website said 150,664 people voted Thursday at one-stop, or early voting, site across North Carolina.
Democrats accounted for 47.3 percent of the Thursday turnout, and Republicans made up 34.8 percent of votes cast that day. Unaffiliated voters accounted for 17.8 percent of the votes cast.
