Peggy, 67, and Doug, 66, met while attending Elkin Elementary School. The two reconnected at a high school reunion in 2010. Emails eventually led to their Sept. 29, 2012, wedding. They live in Statesville, and Doug tells their story.

Typing class: Peggy was a year ahead of me, so it wasn’t till we had class together my junior year of high school that we got to know each other. There was definitely an attraction for us both, and I was flattered when she asked if she could wear my football jersey number during the annual powder puff football game.

Game time: A group of guys and girls got together one Sunday to practice. I was impressed by Peggy’s ability to run the ball, even though she carried it like a loaf of bread. I chased her down every chance I got. I never asked her out because I thought she was dating someone who’d already graduated, something I always regretted.

Wasted time: Peggy graduated a year ahead of me and it was almost 46 years before we met again. I tried flirting with her at a reunion for all the classes from the ’60’s. She didn’t respond so I thought I’d struck out. A month later I got an email saying she’d been so overwhelmed with so many conversations she didn’t realize I was trying to talk to her.

First date: We emailed for about a month before we exchanged phone numbers and had our first date. Then, we sat and talked for four hours with no TV, cellphones or distractions. Now, our high school dream of being together has been realized and we plan to spend the rest of our lives together. Hilary Trenda
