Students from 19 high schools spent their Saturday collecting food at grocery stores across the Charlotte region as part as a competitive food drive.
The 2012 Student Hunger Drive, a six-week campaign, began Oct. 1 to gather food for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
On Saturday, which was declared “GIVE Day,” students went to Food Lion stores in Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Fort Mill, Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis and Mount Pleasant to ask for donations.
Student representatives from East Mecklenburg, Myers Park, Ardrey Kell and Providence high schools also competed in a 90-second shopping spree, collecting a total of 1,550 pounds of food for the drive. East Mecklenburg was named winner of the spree, collecting 468 pounds.
The school that has amassed the most food by the end of the drive will receive $2,000.
