Officials: 2 Matthews fires deliberately set

Investigators in Matthews say two fires that broke out Sunday evening were intentionally set, but they don’t know if the same person or people were responsible.

The first blaze was a brush fire which was reported about 8 p.m. at Campus Ridge Road and CPCC Lane, near the CPCC Levine Campus. The fire burned a little less than a half-acre of vacant property, authorities say. Crews had to return Monday when the fire began smoldering.

The second fire was reported shortly before 11 p.m. at a single-story bungalow in the 2900 block of Pleasant Plains Road, not far from the Mecklenburg-Union county line. That fire heavily damaged a vacant house that Matthews firefighters had been planning to burn in a practice drill in coming weeks.

While acknowledging he doesn’t know if the same person or people set the two fires, Matthews Fire and EMS Chief Dennis Green said, “Both were deliberately set.”

Green asked that anyone with information in the case contact Matthews police, at 704-847-4069.
