Albemarle man charged with beating stepfather

ALBEMARLE -- An Albemarle man is jailed in Stanly County, charged by police with seriously injuring his stepfather during a fight last week.

Albemarle police say Douglas Lee Baughan, of Albemarle, was charged Saturday afternoon with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, causing serious injury. He is being held under $15,000 bond with an initial court date next Monday.

According to police, officers were called about 3 a.m. last Tuesday to a house in the 900 block of Montgomery Avenue. They found James Dean Craver lying in the doorway, severely beaten in the head with some type of blunt object.

Police say Baughan told officers that he and his stepfather had become involved in an argument, and investigators say the stepson admitted to assaulting Craver. Craver was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center and then to Carolinas Medical Center. Police say Craver need six hours of reconstructive surgery on his face.

Detectives say they charged and arrested Baughan after conducting several interviews last week.
