Zoning panel backs Walgreens; key vote Nov. 12

The zoning committee of the Charlotte Planning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday in favor of a proposed Walgreens and office building at the corner of Kenilworth Avenue and East Morehead Street.

The rezoning petition, filed by local developer Lincoln Harris, has been opposed by many Dilworth residents who argue the proposed use won’t fit well with the community.

The zoning committee was scheduled to make a decision on the project last month, but voted to defer its decision so the developer and neighborhood representatives could meet and the developer could address the committee’s concerns about lighting, impeded pedestrian traffic and more narrowly tailored retail use.

Zoning committee member Ray Eschert said the neighborhood group declined to meet with the developer.

City Council members will consider the committee’s vote when deciding whether to approve or deny the petition when it goes before them at the Nov. 12 meeting.
