Observations

• Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski came by the post-game locker room in Raleigh on Tuesday to see his former player, Charlotte Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson. It evolved into a mini-chalk talk, with Coach K and Henderson huddling in front of a white board to discuss how Henderson could get himself open better.

Must have helped: Henderson made five of his first six shot Thursday. He smiled broadly Thursday when asked about Kryzyzewski's gesture, saying, “He’s somebody I go to for a lot of things, not just basketball questions.’’ • Those who coached him previously – Rick Carlisle in Dallas and Ed Tapscott in Washington – said the Bobcats got a steal, acquiring center Brendan Haywood on secondary waivers for $2 million a season.

If Haywood delivers statistics like Thursday’s – 13 rebounds and eight points in 34 minutes – they’ll be right.

• This was the annual middle-school game, where local eighth-graders get to attend. The noise was deafening in the fourth quarter. Haywood joked he’d pay to bring a bunch of them back in the regular season if they promise to raise the noise level at Time Warner Cable Arena.

• Rookies Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jeff Taylor played minimally Thursday, combining for 24 minutes and seven points. Kidd-Gilchrist plays hard, but he was foul-prone Thursday, with three whistles in 13 minutes.
