Deputies identify victim of Caldwell shooting

Caldwell County authorities have identified a man killed in Lenoir late Friday in what the Sheriff called “a tragic accident.”

Deputies found Joseph Clark Young, 31, dead of a gunshot wound around 11:30 p.m.

Deputies were called to a home at 3076 Clarks Chapel Road in reference to someone trespassing on the caller’s property. As deputies were en route, the call changed from a trespassing call to a shooting call. Young was dead when paramedics arrived.

Investigators have not charged anyone with a crime, though they say they’ve interviewed several people at the scene, including someone they deemed “a person of interest.” They have not said whether that person lived at the house or was the person who made the initial call to 911 dispatchers.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to collect evidence at the crime scene and the Caldwell District Attorney’s Office will determine whether any charges will be filed in the case.
