Meghan Symons of Cary Green Hope, Gabby Weiss of Southern Pines Pinecrest and Abbey Hartsell of Alexander Central each had five-over scores of 76 on a cold, blustery and damp day. The course is set at par 71 and a 5,735-yard layout for the championship.
Sarah Bae of Raleigh Athens Drive and New Bern's Shelby Osiecki are two shots back at 78.
Defending individual champion Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Reagan had an 82 on the opening day and is tied for 13th.
Ardrey Kell leads the tight team standings with a 248, two shots ahead of second-place Cary Green Hope and four ahead of Southern Pines Pinecrest. Pfafftown Reagan is fourth at 255, seven shots back.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 14 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the 10th year that the sport has been classified. It is the second time that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.
The final day of play is scheduled to get underway Tuesday morning.
-- In the 1A/2A finals, defending champion Isabella Rusher of Salisbury holds a one-shot lead after Monday's opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1-A/2-A women’s golf championships at the West Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.
Rusher, who won the title by a single shot a year ago, was four over par on a chilly, blustery, damp day with very difficult playing conditions. The course is set at par 71 and a 5,765-yard layout for the championship.
Elkin's Mary Frances Hall is one shot off the pace at 76, with Salisbury's Grace Yatawara in third at 78, three shots back.
Defending champion Salisbury, which rolled to the 1-A/2-A team championship a year ago by a whopping 33 shots over runner-up Northwood, is in the process of doing it again. Salisbury opened up a 29-shot advantage of second-place Newport Croatan, with Monroe Piedmont in third at 280.

-- In the 3A event, South Brunswick's Ashley Sloup has a one-shot advantage in the individual standings after Monday's opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Sloup had a 76 on a day filled with difficult playing conditions and has a one-shot edge over Tara Simmons of Pikeville Charles B. Aycock, who earned medalist honors in the state championship a year ago. Chandler Danielson of West Henderson is third at 79.
The championship layout is a par 71 and 5,770 yards.
Ledford is the defending 3-A team champion and has opened a nine-shot lead over the field. Ledford fired a 255 to 264 for West Henderson, with Northern Guilford third at 269 and Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in fourth at 270.
