Beverly Woods Elementary

Open house: The school will host an open House 9:45 a.m. Nov. 8 for new and prospective parents. There will be an information session and a tour of the school at 6001 Quail Hollow Road. For details, 980-343-3627.

Carmel Christian

Comedy: The Carmel Christian School Players will present “The Foreigner,” a two-act comedy at 7 p.m. Nov. 1, 2 and 3 in the Uptown auditorium on campus. During intermission, dessert will be served. Tickets available at www.carmelchristian.org.

Myers Park High

Marketing conference: Myers Park DECA will host the district’s Marketing Competitive Events Conference Nov. 14. Twelve hundred DECA students from more than 20 CMS high school will compete and prepare for the state and national events.

McAlpine Elementary

Revolutionary War: McAlpine Elementary fourth and fifth graders will re-enact the Revolutionary War battle of Guilford County Courthouse Nov. 1. To distinguish who was hit by enemy fire, fourth graders playing the Americans, will have blue balloon “ammunition” and fifth graders playing British troops, will have green.

Sterling Elementary

PE teacher of the year: Anne Sluder was named Physical Education Teacher of the Year in North Carolina by the Alice Aycock Poe Health Center in Raleigh. Sluder has worked with the Poe Center to promote healthy behaviors for young students. Sterling partners with community organizations, including the Panthers and the Harris YMCA, to bring in wellness programs to the school.

Butler High

Awareness program: CMS and the Mecklenburg County ABC Board have collaborated to raise awareness among students of the danger of drinking and driving. At a press conference at Butler, ABC board leaders and Superintendent Heath Morrison discussed the STAY (Substance Abuse Training Awareness for our Youth) program. STAY will be taught in 12 schools this semester and is funded through the ABC Board’s prevention program.

Providence High

Hunger drive: Through Nov. 9, the student council will participate in the Student Hunger Drive with a Morning Carpool Collection. Every morning, council representatives will be in front of the school at the carpool line collecting donations of canned food.

East Meck

Project review: East Meck needs community/parent volunteers for judging the Graduation Project Review Boards at 2 p.m. Nov. 14. Contact deborah.smith@cms.k12.nc.us or by phone at 980-343-6430, ext.4014600. Volunteers will judge a presentation/project for three to four students beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Hawk Ridge Elementary

Technology program: Hawk Ridge was chosen to be one of the 21 Pilot Schools for Bring Your Own Technology through the efforts of teachers, staff and the School Leadership Team. The process was implemented through October.

Charlotte Country Day

Sharing: Upper School students recently discussed environmental, health, cultural and technology issues with students from their sister school, Arndt Gymnasium in Krefeld, Germany, at a Global Issues Symposium. With faculty as facilitators, the students presented a group’s views on preassigned topics to the symposium after a 30-minute group conversation on the topic.

Charlotte Catholic

Scholarship competition: Kelsey Gove was selected as the Charlotte Catholic High School representative to the Carolinas’ Carrousel Scholarship competition. Kelsey will compete for the scholarship and participate in the Belk Carolinas’ Carrousel Parade on Thanksgiving Day.

Youth council: Kathryn Grace Almon has been appointed to the March of Dimes N.C. Youth Council for the school year for a second term.

Covenant Day

Pineville honors: Covenant Day students earned multiple honors at the recent 15th annual Pineville Fall Festival Art Show. Seventh grader Michael Bose received best in show, sophomore Joe Yardley received first place in the High School Division, seventh grader Haywood Ferguson received third place in the sixth through eighth grade division and fifth grader Eli Kibler received Honorable Mention in third through fifth grade category.
