Construction crews will temporarily close an exit ramp from northbound Interstate 85 onto I-485 near the Cabarrus County line late Friday to work on a new highway interchange.
Barring bad weather, the exit ramp is expected to be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Crews will be setting bridge girders for the future interchange.
Drivers needing to get on 485 can take I-85 northbound to Bruton Smith Boulevard (exit 49) then follow U.S. 29 south back to 485, transportation officials said.
The new interchange is expected to be completed in June 2014 and is part of a broader project to add the remaining 5.7-miles of the I-485 outer loop around Mecklenburg. Crews also are widening about 7 miles of I-85 in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties.
