Explore the Outdoors Festival

Hands-on activities will include fishing, rock climbing, wildlife encounters and interactive educational exhibits on outdoor safety, the environment, conservation, etc. Bring your fishing rod, or borrow one from the EnergyExplorium. Lunch can be purchased.

Hockey

Try hockey for free

1:30 p.m.-3:50 p.m. Saturday. Extreme Ice Center, 4705 Indian Trail Fairview Road, Indian Trail. 704-882-1830. xicenter.com.

Kids ages 4-10 can try ice hockey for free. Register your child on Extreme Ice Center’s website. A free lesson will be provided, as well as skates and equipment. Kids need to bring a helmet and gloves, although a bike helmet and mittens will suffice.

Festival

Waxhaw’s First Friday – Salute to Veterans

5-9:30 p.m. Friday. Downtown Waxhaw. waxhaw.com.

Visit Appreciation Stations and write a letter, color a picture or put together a treat bag for U.S. military personnel deployed overseas. Take part in the artistic mural “The Hands You Protect,” under construction at Eight Legs Gallery. Thank a veteran by purchasing a brick for the Military Wall of Honor. Patriotic music and free carriage rides.

Local band Time Sawyer is shooting a video for its upcoming fourth album and invites music fans to get involved. The band will provide food and beverages and give away band-related prizes throughout the evening. More details, RSVP on band’s Facebook page.

Grand opening of Pizza Fusion

Pizza Fusion celebrates its Charlotte grand opening with free pizza and drinks, plus a chance to win free pizza for a year, or even a lifetime. Drex and Maney, hosts of KISS 95.1 FM, will broadcast live and give away concert tickets and other prizes.
