Downed line affects Beech Mountain

BEECH MOUNTAIN -- A main power transmission line snapped Thursday afternoon near the North Carolina-Tennessee border, knocking out power to the Beech Mountain resort area and putting two radio stations off the air for several hours.

The Tennessee Valley Authority line broke about 2:30 p.m., due to a buildup of ice and gusty winds, the TVA said.

Power was knocked out from Beech Mountain across the Tennessee border to near Elizabethton. Crews were able to restore power by Thursday evening to much of the Beech Mountain area, but some customers were still without electricity Friday morning. Repairs are expected to be completed by late morning.

The power outage affected the on-air operations of WATA-AM and WMMY-FM, which broadcasts from Beech Mountain.
