Q&A: Former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs

We ask 10 questions of former Washington Redskins coach turned NASCAR owner Joe Gibbs:

   Q. Do you miss coaching football?

I’ve got so much going on with racing and, honestly, I don’t have time to catch my breath I’m going so hard. I’m traveling all over the place and I really enjoy racing and the relationships. My world is pretty filled up so I don’t have much opportunity to concentrate on football.

But you always miss the players and the competition and making calls on the sideline.

  Q. Is there a temptation to change the pit box TV to football during caution periods on Sundays?

Normally, I’m so worried (about racing) that all I do is watch and pray and hope nothing bad happens.

  Q. Do you still have any Redskins gear you wear?

I’ve got t-shirts that I wear when I’m running. I have some sweatshirts with Redskins stuff and hats with the script R. I have quite a bit of that.

   Q. Do you get recognized more as a football coach or race team owner?

In Charlotte, racing. Outside Charlotte, football.

   Q. Are you happy to be recognized either way?

The good thing is it means you’re still here. The alternative is not real good.

  Q. You’re not entirely out of coaching. Don’t you coach your grandkids?

I’ve done it three years. I had grandsons that were 10 years old and I coach in the eight-man tackle league. Two grandkids have gone through it. Two more will do it next year.

That’s a different world for me. I try to get them to concentrate on something and that is not an easy chore. I’m always amazed. I hear things like, ‘Coach, how much longer do we have to be out here?’ I’m always telling them their high school coach is going to have you running laps every day.

   Q. Did you have some pros who acted like 10-year-olds?

That might be the case, yeah. The little guys always surprise me. I tell (wife) Pat we’re going to get killed because they didn’t pay attention in practice. When they get out there, they play five times as good as thought. They play their guts out.

  Q. Do you appreciate the fan side of football now?

I’m a regular fan. I don’t spend a lot of time trying to over-think something. I really don’t. I’m the biggest Redskins fan.

   Q. As a coach, would you love to coach Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III?

I sure would have. I think they have somebody special there.

   Q. Your book, Game Plan For Life, is out in paperback now and you stay busy speaking around the country. You just hired a former player, Renaldo Wynn, to work with you. How do you feel about the book’s overall impact ( www.gameplanforlife.com)?

We have (an event) formula we started here in Charlotte. We tried put it on a grassroots level where we get a committee of 15-20 guys and have them pick 100 table hosts. We supply materials for small group studies and the hosts follow up on their group and whatever decisions anybody made. We had great results here and decided we needed to keep doing it in other cities.

We do one or two a month. We don’t ask for anything. Everyone gets free breakfast and signed book. It’s the single best thing I’ve done as far as speaking and giving testimony.

With some of these, I go to prisons to speak also. I love going there to speak. I’ve never had a person in prison be disrespectful. They’re fixed on what you’re saying. It’s been great.
