Armanti Edwards validates pick Carolina Panthers used to take him, sort of

Carolina Panthers 21, Washington Redskins 13

When the Carolina Panthers gave up a second-round draft choice in 2011 to select Armanti Edwards in the third round of the 2010 draft I was thrilled. I’d seen Edwards at Appalachian State. He was quick and tough and a leader. I knew he’d be a good pro. He caught one pass Sunday and took it 82 yards. So I guess I was right.

    •   The Panthers won because: they averaged 4.8 yards per run; didn’t fumble or throw an interception; converted 45% of their third-down conversions and held Washington to 20%; and made the plays that determined the outcome, among them Edwards’ reception, among them stopping Robert Griffith III for no gain on fourth and goal from the Carolina 2.

•   The video screens at FedEx Field flash a message that asks fans to make noise.  The Redskins celebrate their 80th anniversary this season. You’d think that after 80 years fans could decide all by themselves whether to make noise.

I asked Charlotte Bobcats’ owner Michael Jordan Thursday if he had advice for Cam Newton. Jordan said, athlete to athlete, he did.  The story ran Friday. I ask Newton if he saw Jordan’s advice and what he thought of it.

“No sir, I didn’t see it,” says Newton.

How can you be a leader if you don’t read the local newspaper? Sorry. This isn’t about me.

“I think Michael Jordan is … an outlet for me to talk to,” Newton says. “And everybody knows his skill set of what he brought to the game of basketball and how great he played at a high level for years to come. So I’m very close to him and I have an ongoing relationship with him and will continue to have it. So anything he has said I need to do, my ears are open. And you know I’m going to be willing to do it.”

•  Most throwback uniforms ought to be thrown out. But Washington’s are as good as I’ve seen. The scheme is simple, the colors strong and the helmets, unadorned by design, great. Also, the Redskins did not look like bumble bees.
