Police searching for hit-and-run driver

By Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

Police are trying to find the driver of a red or burgundy SUV that struck a pedestrian on Albemarle Road then made a U-turn and sped off, leaving a trail of leaking fluid from a damaged front end.

The pedestrian, whose identity wasn’t released, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The pedestrian was struck by a red or burgundy SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee, on Albemarle Road between Sharon Amity and Redman Roads just before 7 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

After striking the pedestrian, police say the driver made a U-turn before reaching Sharon Amity Road, then traveled outbound on Albemarle Road, past the crash scene and the injured pedestrian, and continued toward Central Avenue.

Police encourage anyone with information about the crash to call investigators at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
