Fifth grader wins spelling bee title

-
Sam Quarles

Sam Quarles won the Charlotte Preparatory School spelling bee Nov. 6 after dueling last year’s winner and 24 other students over two dozen rounds.

“I am totally shocked,” said Sam, a fifth-grader, after spelling the word “incarceration” to win. “It was a medium-hard word.”

Finishing second was eighth-grader Olivia Jones, who last year won the Charlotte Observer spelling bee in addition to the Charlotte Prep championship.
