Sam Quarles won the Charlotte Preparatory School spelling bee Nov. 6 after dueling last years winner and 24 other students over two dozen rounds.
I am totally shocked, said Sam, a fifth-grader, after spelling the word incarceration to win. It was a medium-hard word.
Finishing second was eighth-grader Olivia Jones, who last year won the Charlotte Observer spelling bee in addition to the Charlotte Prep championship.
