Theres good news for Carolina Panthers fans and Christmas shoppers -- this weekends planned road work on East Independence Boulevard has been postponed.
The N.C. Department of Transportation had planned for milling and repaving Friday night through Sunday night on both sides of Independence Boulevard, between Eastway Drive and Briar Creek Road. The road surface is damaged in that area, and crews from Ferebee Corporation had been contracted by the state to do the work.
Jen Thompson, a spokeswoman for the state DOT, said crews had planned to finish the work before the end of Sunday afternoons Panthers-Denver Broncos game at Bank of America Stadium, so outbound traffic on Independence Boulevard would not be affected.
Work on the inbound side was scheduled to be finished by Saturday night, so it would not impact fans headed to the game Sunday morning.
However, heavier-than-average traffic also is expected on Independence Boulevard because of the Southern Christmas Show at The Park, near Bojangles Coliseum.
So Thompson said Friday that all work will be postponed.
No lane closures will take place this weekend, she said.
Independence Boulevard motorists have dealt with roadwork-related detours on weekends recently. Crews were resurfacing the ramp from inbound Independence to the John Belk Freeway, and that ramp was closed on at least two weekends this fall.
