Lenoir woman, dog, killed in apartment fire

Authorities in Caldwell County are investigating what sparked an apartment fire that killed a 60-year-old woman and her pet Chihuahua.

Fire officials say they were called to the Vance Street Apartments in Lenoir after 11 p.m. Friday. Officials responding at the scene found the body of Shiela Jean Jones and her pet dog.

Authorities said Jones lived at the apartment by herself, and no other injuries were reported. But the American Red Cross was called in to help tenants in adjacent apartment units that were displaced. In all, damage to the apartment building was estimated at $100,000, according to Lenoir police.

Fire and police investigators were working Saturday to determine the cause of the fire.
