As people search for music on the radio, they are stumbling across and discovering Fort Mill’s newest gem, WFBK-FM (91.5).
“Fort Mill never had its own radio station until now,” said Jack Anthony, WFBK operations manager. “WFBK is the antithesis of corporate radio. It’s really the wave of the future, focused on our community, our people and our events.”
Anthony spins adult alternative tunes for his audience and features two community programs.
“Your YC” by Sheila Caldwell, formerly of WRHI-AM (1340), provides a five-minute weekday podcast at 7 a.m. for and about the people of York County. Caldwell also hosts “Around Town” at 10 a.m. on Fridays and features interviews with area newsmakers.
WFBK, owned by Spirit Broadcasting, went on-air full time in mid August. With an FM signal of only 140 watts, WFBK has a limited geographical audience from its Sutton Road tower. Listeners, however, can connect using their computers, tablets and mobile devices from anywhere.
“Most public radio listeners are tech savvy and the limited FM signal is not an issue,” said Anthony.
Anthony’s radio experience spans 20 years, including long stints on Charlotte’s WRFX-FM
(“The Fox” 99.7), and WEND-FM
(“The End” 106.5). He most recently started his own production company, Studio at the End of the Universe, which furnishes voiceovers, commercials and jingles.
Broadcasting WFBK from his Fort Mill home, Anthony hopes to acquire a Fort Mill studio in the near future.
“The studio would allow for more local programming,” Anthony said. “I hope to have a morning talk block that would feature topics of interest such as parenting, fitness, nutrition and community issues.
“This listener supported community radio station can really bring the town together and help add to its identity. I am open to all ideas on how to get people involved in the station and have it reflect what people want to hear.”
