Three 1990's model Honda Accords were reported stolen from two neighboring Rock Hill apartment complexes this week, according to police reports.
One car owner told police her green 1996 Honda Accord was stolen from the Gable Oaks Apartments parking lot between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday.
Two other Honda owners told police they believe their 1990’s model Honda Accords were stolen from the Patriot’s Crossing Apartment parking lot between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Accords from the mid 1990s have flawed ignition systems that make the cars more susceptible to theft.
One of the Hondas stolen from the Patriot’s Crossing parking lot was a 1997 Accord — the car model stolen the most in S.C. during 2011, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The second car taken from the Patriot’s Crossing lot was a 1994 Accord — the model stolen the most nationwide in 2011, according to NICB data.
Gable Oaks and Patriot’s Crossing are located near Cherry Road and Interstate 77.
The majority of car theft in Rock Hill happens in areas close to the interstate, said Rock Hill police spokesman Lt. Brad Redfearn.
Quick access to the interstate and a large number of cars in shopping centers, apartment and hotel parking lots make the Cherry Road corridor a “target rich environment,” he said.
Past car theft trends, Redfearn said, show that the thieves could be from Columbia or Charlotte, not local residents.
