Driver dies after I-85 wreck near McAdenville

Officials say speed was a factor in a fatal crash Friday on southbound Interstate 85 that left a Charlotte man dead and a second person injured.

The wreck occurred around 3 p.m. Friday near exit 23 in McAdenville.

Officials say a Ford truck driven by 71-year-old Carl Lee Clegg of Charlotte struck a yellow work truck from behind causing the Ford truck to leave the roadway. Clegg’s truck hit a guardrail, travelled across the interstate and then rolled over into a concrete median before coming to wreck.

Clegg and a second person was taken to the hospital after the wreck, but the Charlotte man later died from his injuries.

The other injured person is said to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Speed was a factor in the crash, officials say, and the results of a toxicology test are pending.

No charges are expected to be filed.
